about
The song was written about an encounter in the street: “She talked to me for a while, telling me about how her life used to be great in the ‘80s but now the city's busy, cold and lonely,” Gull recounts. “She said she used to have fun with her friends and motorbike around Australia, but now she can't even sit on the street without getting fined or arrested. She was tired of everything, old with nothing to look forward to, just waiting to be crucified.”

CITY IS BUSY LYRICS
The city is busy and everyone's dizzy
Walking the streets in vanity
People are pretty but I'm so weary
Of everyone I see
A crowd can be lonely, when you're the only one
who holds your memory
Of body and mind and soul alike
From a forgotten life
And now I'll take the open road
The city is busy
And who without sinning
Cannot be living
The future is danger
Cause everyone’s strangers
Society made us grow apart
We were happy ever after
Back in the eighties
We were happy, now we’re
Waiting to be crucified
We only want our freedom when we get old
Return for all we’ve given when we get old
Get lost in conversation when we get old
They’ll throw us all in prison when we get old
The city is busy
and everyone’s clinging
To a sad reality
Working their jobs
Clutching their money
Clinging to their sanity
Fighting till the current takes them
We used to be trippers
Lovers and thinkers
Put on the earth to break the mold
Now where does the power flow
In the emptiness of disconnected souls?
We were happy ever after
Back in the eighties
We were happy ever after
Back in the eighties
Everybody was open eyed and having a good time
Now I’m waiting to be crucified, waiting to be crucified
We only want our freedom when we get old
Return for all we’ve given when we get old
Get lost in conversation when we get old
They’ll throw us all in prison when we get old
Silver lights shine where I go
All along the lonely road
One of legs and two of bones
Won’t be long before I
Check on out and hit the deck
Join my family and my friends
And return to all the stars that heaven blessed
Cause we all burn out in the end
We all burn out in the end
We only want our freedom when we get old
Return for all we’ve given when we get old
Get lost in conversation when we get old
They’ll throw us all in prison when we get old
We get old
